It is not easy to live in the twenty-first century. These are times of profound change. We are surrounded by uncertainty, conflict, war and injustice.
We seem to be losing faith in our leaders. We are deeply concerned about global warming. We can hardly keep pace with the rapid speed of technological development, and we are not sure what kind of world these advances are leading us towards. Something within us longs for peace, for stability, for a return to a time when we felt more secure and were convinced that we had a stable future. We hope that the turmoil will pass and that life will, once again, become predictable and secure.
Yet, there has never been a time in human history entirely free from upheaval. Every period has faced its own struggles and tensions. What may distinguish our own time is not that it is uniquely troubled, but that our means of communication allow us to be aware of every crisis as it unfolds. Perhaps, too, humanity has reached such a level of collective awareness that we are now able to recognise the interconnected nature of all these crises.
Spiritual wisdom tells us that consciousness evolves through conflict and crisis, and that this is the path of evolution for humanity. If we look at the achievements humanity has made throughout history, we can recognise the struggles and challenges through which they came into being. We are continually drawn into crisis mode so that we have a chance to outgrow what is no longer useful, and to create more inclusive ways of living based on right relations and goodwill. Thus our collective awareness needs to take another leap forward and ground itself in the fact that we are all responsible for creating, shaping and designing our future.
To fulfil that responsibility we need to cooperate fully with the process that is taking place, asking ourselves, as One Humanity, what the present difficulties are revealing, what has outlived its usefulness, and what new possibilities are seeking to emerge, so that we can align with them. We have the opportunity to give birth to the future. As creative meditators, we recognise that this calling is not an abstract or distant ideal. It begins with ourselves, with the quality of our own consciousness, and of the relationships forged in our groups and communities.
In our Spiritual Universe, the Principles of Essential Divinity and of Unanimity are fundamental realities. They find expression through the eternal Laws of Spiritual Approach and Group Endeavour. Through Creative Meditation, we consciously cooperate with their gradual embodiment in human consciousness and in the world of form. In doing so, we shape ourselves as individual points of Light, increasingly grounded in Right Relationship and Goodwill. Through this steady process of inner transformation, we become, step after step, the future citizens of the New Age.
As we do this, we gradually learn to recognise these spiritual realities as they struggle to manifest themselves through the conflicts, distortions and polarities of the present age. We hold the vision of that which is seeking to come into being, and consciously nourish its growth through our thoughts, our attitudes, our relationships and our actions.
This is both our privilege and our responsibility. When we learn to dis-identify from the changing forms of outer life and identify with the enduring reality of the soul, a quiet joy naturally emerges. We recognise that through turmoil, evolution is moving towards a meaningful destination.
Our task is to remain steadfastly focused upon the spiritual essence that is seeking expression in a world of form that undergoes continual transformation. Adapting to the accelerated pace at which evolution is unfolding may help us realise that the peace and stability we yearn for are not to be found in the world of form, but in the Spiritual Principles and Laws that are informing its evolution. There is profound joy in this recognition: that there is a path, that there is meaning behind the events of history, that there is purpose within the evolutionary process, and that humanity is steadily advancing towards its spiritual destiny.
